To make proper honors to my new balanced and healthy life I’ve launched myself into a long-term dietary regime in which I go for as much organic and unprocessed foods as I can find. I’m also avoiding high sugar boosts and going for fresh fruits when I do have a craving. Tea is gradually substituting my normally huge caffeine intake, and bread and pastas are, for the time being, out the window.
The thing is… I’m so totally hooked on those little Dannon cups of coffee-flavored yogurts that I’m finding it really hard to let them go…!
Years ago I discovered and loved them–they have zero fat, after all, and a 160 calories; not too bad for a dessert I particularly like. What has intrigued me is not only why I constantly crave them, but also why after I have one cup I feel a very strong urge to have a second one, and perhaps even a third and a fourth one. I still don’t know what took me so long to look into the yogurt’s actual sugar content: 25 grams!!!! Even further, as opposed to other yogurt brands offering coffee/capuccino-flavors, Dannon’s actually has real caffeine (the others use decaf coffee).
After taking a look, I’m devastated–there is no way I can keep on having this little treat, if each cup is going to inject me with a huge sugar shot
With a history of diabetes in my family and my own clear addiction to sugar, I have to be careful. Struggling to find a remedy, I think of something creative: diluting the Dannon. I have this great 0% fat, plain-flavor pure and organic greek yogurt that I’ve been getting recently for breakfast (blueberries and some reasonable amount of granola). I decide that maybe I can split the Dannon into 4-5 parts, dilute them with the other yogurt, and that will reduce the amount of caffeine and sugar I get each time.
For now, it’s worked–more or less. I still feel tempted to have the whole damn cup, but since I’m afraid of the chain reaction is causes in me, I’m resisting it for now.
Oh, the path to health… (sigh).
